Update: 19 die in Aswan accident, 3 die in Cairo-Alex road crash
Nineteen people died Sunday night when a microbus crashed into a truck near the city of Edfu, north of Aswan, state-run Al-Ahram reported.
Five children were among the victims, news reports stated.
According to state news agency MENA, the microbus was headed to Cairo when it crashed on the desert road. The victims were transferred to the Edfu morgue, the report added.
In light of the tragic accident, the governor of Aswan, Mostafa Yousry, decided to cancel all celebrations related to Aswan’s National Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the construction of the High Dam.
Three people were also killed Monday morning in an accident on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road. Heavy fog and lack of visibility are said to have caused 40 cars and trucks to crash.
Road accidents claim about 12,000 lives every year in Egypt, according to the World Health Organization.
Earlier this month, eight people were also killed when a tourist bus crashed into a truck on the desert road near Beni Suef.
