Two explosions hit Ramses Railway Station and Helwan University
A "sound bomb" went off near the Ramses Railway Station on Thursday. According to reports, another bomb was defused by the bomb squad inside the station.
Following the blast, the transportation minister inspected the explosion site and Railway Authority Head Samir Nawar stated that the bomb was placed in the last car of the Cairo-Alexandria train on Platform 2. The official confirmed that the explosion occurred after all passengers had departed from the train.
The explosion left little damage inside the train, according to the state-owned Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Another explosion took place near Helwan University, according to the privately owned Youm7 newspaper. The homemade bomb was placed in the Waha Café near campus. Health Ministry Spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar told Mada Masr that the first explosion left no causalities while the second outside the University campus injured six people.
At least 16 people were injured when another “sound bomb” exploded in a Cairo metro car last Thursday. Most injuries resulted from a stampede due to the chaos that followed the blast, which occurred on the Marg-Helwan line between Helmeyet Zeitoun and Hadayeq Zeitoun metro stations. Like today's sound bomb, the blast resulted in minor damage to the body and the ceiling of the train.
This is not the first bomb to target public transportation. In March, one person was injured by a homemade explosive device on the Heliopolis tram. Two other homemade bombs were defused by the bomb squad that day, one of which had been planted near the Marghany metro station.
