Travel bans on Egypt lifting soon, govt claims

International bans on flights to Egypt would soon be lifted, claimed Tourism Minister Ashraf Zaazaa on Thursday.

The ministry is also awaiting the implementation of new flight routes from Kuwait and Riadh to Sharm Al-Sheikh and Hurghada, reported the privately owned daily Al-Shorouk.

Despite this promising news, however, the Cabinet’s announced plan to develop the tourism sector this year would not be implemented, as tourism revenues dwindled to LE9.5 billion in the past year, Zaazaa claimed.

The number of tourists visiting Egypt has decreased by half a million, he added.

In an effort to improve Egypt’s image abroad, Zaazaa said he asked the Information Ministry to remove banners reading “Egypt Fighting Terrorism” that have accompanied broadcasts on both state-owned and private television channels.

Several European countries issued a travel ban to Egypt following the deadly dispersal of Brotherhood protest camps in mid-August, which triggered a wave of violence across the country that claimed over 1,000 lives in total.
