Sisi tasks PM Mehleb with forming new government
Newly elected president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has tasked Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb with forming a new government immediately after he submitted his Cabinet’s resignation, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.
Following its final meeting on Monday morning, the Cabinet submitted its resignation to Sisi, according to a statement on its Facebook page.
In his resignation letter, Mehleb said he and the other ministers would submit their resignations to the president-elect to “pave the way for whoever you see fit to serve the country and complete the goals of the coming period.”
The letter highlighted the Cabinet’s achievements amid difficult circumstances.
Mehleb claimed he and the other ministers exerted their utmost efforts to fulfill their duties in spite of tough surroundings. The Cabinet worked on addressing spiraling workers’ demands and restoring productivity to many factories, he added, a reference to a wave of strikes that broke out across Egypt at the beginning of the year.
The Cabinet also maintained neutrality and transparency, paving the way for Egyptians to elect “the leader they love and trust” in a democratic system, Mehleb said.
The prime minister said the Cabinet fulfilled its national duty with regards to draft laws presented to it, deciding on legislation according to the necessities and demands of the political climate.
The government also worked on achieving social justice, and “easing the pain” of the underprivileged, as well as implementing plans for services and facilities in impoverished areas, he wrote.
Mehleb concluded his resignation letter by thanking members of the government for their efforts during this difficult time.
