Sisi sets new maximum wage cap for public sector

Sisi sets new maximum wage cap for public sector
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has set a new limit on the maximum wage in the public sector, capping it at LE42,000 per month, reported on Thursday the state-owned news portal EgyNews.

The maximum wage is now set at 35 times the new minimum wage, which was boosted up to LE1,200 per month by former Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi's Cabinet.

The amended maximum wage law applies to those working in the governmental sector, municipalities, national authorities and state-owned services and economic institutions.

The new maximum and minimum wages are meant to enforce Article 27 of the 2014 Constitution, which stipulates that “the economic system is socially obliged to equal opportunities, fair distribution of development returns, decreasing the differences between wages, the commitment to a minimum wage that grants good living standards, and a maximum wage to all state actors according to the law.”

Before he left office, Mansour had passed a decree doubling Sisi’s salary from LE21,000 to LE42,000, but last week the new president declared he would donate half of his salary to the state to help the country recover from its dire economic crisis.
