President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a presidential decree on Saturday, forming a board of scientists and experts that reports directly to him with technical and scientific advice.

The board includes Egypt’s most celebrated scientific minds, including Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zuwail, world renowned heart surgeon Magdy Yacoub, and economist Mohamed al-Eriyan, who was rumored to be under consideration for the position of prime minister last year.

The council also includes experts in the fields of energy, agriculture, technology and education.

According to the decree, the council, whose work is voluntary, is tasked with giving scientific and technical advice to the president in all fields and to study government proposals and advise on their viability.

The council would also prepare periodic reports on the advancement of national projects such as the new Suez Canal. It is expected to keep the president updated with the latest scientific findings across the world, plus the possibility of making use of them in Egypt.

The council will hold its sessions in presidential residences and should assemble at least on a bi-monthly basis. The President retains the right to call the council for a meeting in case of crisis or necessity, and heads its meetings when he attends.
