Security investigates explosion reports in Suez
Security officials told Reuters on Tuesday that they are investigating reports of an explosion near the Suez Canal.
The explosion, according to the sources, did not impede shipping activities.
According to Reuters, witnesses heard an explosion in a residential area one kilometer away from the canal.
Privately-owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported that security has opened investigations into the source of the explosion which was also noted by the control towers in the area.
The newspaper also reported however that military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali denied that an explosion took place.
The Suez Canal represents one of Egypt's main sources of income and is also regarded as a major pillar of regional security because of its importance to global trade.
