Security forces in Qalyubiya defused a homemade bomb on Sunday, independently owned newspaper Al-Shorouk reported. The bomb was found near Abu Bakr al-Seddiq school complex in Bahteem, Shubra al-Kheima.

The bomb contained metal nails and was wired to a timer. A bomb squad searched the area for any other explosives and a security cordon was deployed around the school.

No casualties were reported.

Two military officers died last month during a raid on Arab Sharkas village in Qanater, Qalyubiya, during which several Islamist militants were killed and others captured. The assailants, affiliated with Sinai-based Ansar Beit al-Maqdes, were reportedly involved in terrorist attacks against the Armed Forces. Around three tones of explosives — homemade bombs and explosive belts were confiscated during the raid.

Several Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Qalyubiya are currently being trialed for inciting violence and blocking the Qalyub agricultural road last July.
