Province of Sinai releases footage of Arish airport attack
Islamic State-affiliate Province of Sinai released footage showing missiles being fired at a military aircraft on the runway of Arish airport in North Sinai, according to the Amaq News Agency, the militant group’s media arm.
Province of Sinai claimed responsibility on Wednesday for a mortar attack on Arish airport that, according to Egypt’s Armed Forces statement on Tuesday, killed an officer and injured two others, while causing damage to a helicopter. Sinai News, however, reported that two military personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Ismail al-Shehaby and pilot Colonel Refaat Mondowa, were killed in the attack.
The attack took place during an unannounced visit to North Sinai by Defense Minister Sedky Sobhy and Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar on Tuesday.
In their Wednesday statement, Province of Sinai claimed that it had knowledge of the visit by the two ministers and was able to damage a helicopter accompanying the security delegation to Arish using a guided Kornet missile, killing and injuring officers on board.
The attack was documented to show "the targeting of the helicopter transferring the supreme commander of the Armed Forces and the Interior Minister in the Arish airport two days ago," Amaq stated on Thursday.
The 33-second video published on Thursday showed a missile, which appears to have been fired from land, hitting and damaging a helicopter on an airport runway.
The Armed Forces spokesperson has not responded to the release of the video.
