Protesters march against activists’ sentence
A number of protesters gathered in front of the Opera House on Monday afternoon to express rejection to the sentencing of activists on charges of violating the newly passed Protest Law.
Protesters marched toward Talaat Harb street in Downtown Cairo. They were prompted by the sentencing on Sunday of activists Ahmed Maher and Mohamed Adel from the April 6 Youth Movement and activist Ahmed Douma to three years in prison and a fine of LE50,000 each for violating the Protest Law.
The protest Included members from the April 6 Youth Movement and the Revolution Path Front, who gathered in solidarity with the arrested activists.
As it turned to the downtown area, the protest stopped in front of the headquarters of the Tagammu Party, a leftist party that has showed support to the current pro-military government. Protesters slammed the party for supporting the constitutional draft proposed by a committee appointed by the government. "Say yes to the constitution, you are a feloul [remnant of the old regime] party," chanted the protesters. The march made a second stop in front of the burnt down formerly ruling National Democratic Party headquarters and chanted against the fallen regime.
