Pro-Morsi protesters target Cairo, Luxor airports
Deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters allegedly poured car oil on the main bridge leading to the Cairo International Airport on Thursday morning, crippling traffic for several hours, reported the privately owned daily newspaper Al-Shorouk.
Airport security reportedly detained a number of the offenders, who allegedly stated that the act was a sign of protest against what they call the military coup that ousted the president.
Security personnel cleaned the bridge and traffic returned to normal by the afternoon, Al-Shorouk reported.
The organizers of the pro-Morsi sit-in at the Rabea al-Adaweya Mosque in Nasr City have planned protest actions at the airport on a nearly daily basis, threatening to completely halt movement in and out of the airport.
In Luxor, pro-Morsi protesters and members of the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy — a recently founded Islamist coalition that has organized several protest actions in support of Morsi over the past three weeks — allegedly attempted to storm the Luxor Airport, ramming into security cabins with their cars and motorcycles, privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm reported on Thursday.
Armed Forces and police were allegedly deployed to the area to provide backup for the airport security teams, AMAY said, adding that military forces had also been deployed to state buildings, monuments and museums across Luxor in anticipation of further acts of violence.
Morsi’s supporters have vowed to continue their actions until the former president, ousted by the military on July 3, returns to office.
