Pro-Morsi and pro-Sisi protesters clash at Zagazig University
At least 12 students were wounded in clashes at Zagazig University between supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi and supporters of Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday, the Al-Ahram portal reported. The two groups exchanged stones and possibly gunfire, the state-run website said.
Morsi supporters chanted against the military and the Ministry of Interior, gathering in front of the Engineering College before marching around the campus with banners bearing the Rabea symbol, a hand with four fingers memorializing the clearing of Rabea al-Adaweya square on August 14, when hundreds were killed by security forces.
Clashes broke out after this march intersected with a march of Sisi supporters.
Central Security Forces then deployed and surrounded the university.
Students in the Anti-Coup Alliance, an umbrella group originally formed by a number of pro-Morsi activists and Muslim Brotherhood members, had called for protests on Tuesday after their marches were attacked by security forces on Sunday, October 6. The October 6 marches were on their way to Tahrir Square, where thousands of people had gathered at the behest of the military to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the October War.
Zagazig is the capital of the Sharqiya governorate in the Delta. Morsi was born in the city.
