Popular Current supports retrial of Mubarak for killing protesters
Members of the Popular Current, a parliamentary coalition of parties aligned with the revolution, supported the retrial of Mubarak for the killing of protesters and demanded renewed investigations into other charges against the former president.
A delegation that headed to the prosecutor’s office on Sunday included: Former Social Solidarity Minister and leading figure in the Democratic Current Ahmed Borai, activist George Ishak and the Dostour Party’s spokesperson Khaled Daoud.
In November, the judge dismissed the case against Mubarak for the killing of protesters, citing a procedural error by the prosecution. He also acquitted him of charges concerning selling gas to Israel at below market rates and dismissed other charges of financial corruption due to the statute of limitation of the crime.
Earlier this month, the prosecutor general appealed the criminal court’s acquittal of Mubarak.
Daoud told Mada Masr that the group presented a memo to the prosecution supporting the appeal of Mubarak’s acquittal. They also presented the results of the first fact-finding committee, which was formed under the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and concluded that military officers were responsible for the killing of protesters.
“Our aim is to send a message that those involved in the killing of protesters should be held accountable and that we don’t accept impunity because it would allow others to repeat the same crimes.” Daoud said.
The third demand the group made was for the implementation of the November ruling, in which the judge determined that the properties involved in the unresolved financial corruption charges should be confiscated by the state.
The group also requested renewed investigations against Mubarak and others in the February 2011 clashes, known as “The Battle of the Camel.” Several Mubarak regime figures have been acquitted in this case.
Mubarak’s only remaining criminal sentence is in the case of presidential mansions, for which he was found guilty of embezzling state funds. Mubarak’s appeal against the charges was accepted and the prosecution ordered a retrial for the former president and his sons.
