Police disperse Al-Iman Mosque sit-in

Security forces attacked a sit-in staged by the Muslim Brotherhood in Al-Iman Mosque in Nasr City in the late hours of Thursday, Mohamed Sultan, a member of the media committee of the dispersed Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in, said.

The Al-Iman Mosque sit-in was staged to protest the death of hundreds of Brotherhood supporters during the forcible dispersal of the Rabea al-Adaweya and Nahda Square gatherings by the military and the police on Wednesday. 

According to Sultan, police attacked the mosque around midnight and fired tear gas to disperse protesters. Protesters evacuated the mosque five by five. Sultan added that policemen in civilian clothes and bulletproof vests stormed the mosque, where corpses from Wednesday's violence were lying, and took 12 unidentified bodies. 

Prior to the dispersal, Mada Masr had counted 250 corpses inside the mosque. The Ministry of Health put the death toll from Wednesday's violence at 638, although it is unclear whether the corpses inside the mosque are yet accounted for. 

This is the third failed attempt by deposed President Mohamed Morsi's protesters to organize a sit-in following the dispersal of the Rabea al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins. They have been demanding the reinstatement of Morsi, who was deposed by the military on July 3. Brotherhood protesters had also tried to regroup around the Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque in Mohandiseen and at the Arab al-Maadi area on Wednesday, but were quickly dispersed by police in the evening.
