One person died and nine were injured in three bombings that took place in Alexandria this morning, state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported.
Media sources also reported bombs in Cairo, the Delta and Upper Egypt on Sunday morning, some of which were defused, while others exploded and resulted in casualties.
A bomb exploded in the area of Soyouf in Alexandria, near Carrefour mall, leaving one dead and five injured, according to Al-Ahram, followed by another explosion in front of Muharram Police Station in central Alexandria, leaving four injured. A third explosion took place in Alexandria, near Bab Sharq Police Station.
Al-Ahram also reported a bomb on the railway tracks in Qalyubia on Sunday morning. According to the railway authorities, there were no injuries and train activity resumed normally.
An explosion in an electricity dissemination kiosk under Fardous bridge in Cairo’s eastern district of Nasr City occurred on Sunday, resulting in a small fire that was contained.
Al-Ahram also reported the evacuation of five faculties at Al-Azhar University in Assiut after a bomb was discovered in each faculty.
Al-Masry Al-Youm reported the deactivation of four bombs under an electricity tower in Mahalla on Sunday, and another near a room used by the governor of Monufiya in Shebeen al-Kom, according to security sources.
A fake bomb was found later on Sunday near the new Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar’s home. Civil protection forces headed to the scene on Makran Ebeid Street in Nasr City and combed the area for explosives.
The suspected bomb turned out to be an empty canister, privately owned Al-Shorouk newspaper reported.
In a major cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, former head of the National Security Apparatus, Abdel Ghaffar, replaced Mohamed Ibrahim, who survived an assassination attempt in September 2013, when a car bomb exploded near his house in Nasr City.
In Moqattam, a bomb squad reportedly detonated a homemade explosive device on road 9 on Sunday, according to state-owned EGYNews. The bomb was wrapped as a gift and placed by unidentified men on the pavement.
One of the people injured in an explosion in Mahalla on Friday died today, raising the casualties to three, while three others remain in intensive care and five under medical supervision.
