Officer dead, another injured in Ain Shams
A junior police officer was killed, and another injured, in an exchange of fire with Muslim Brotherhood members in Ain Shams, northern Cairo. The assailants were part of a pro-Brotherhood protest, state-owned news portal EgyNews reported, and had been chanting against the military and the police.
According to local newspapers, the assailants shot at the police force securing the Evangelical Church when they tried to disperse the crowd. Both officers were taken to the Police Hospital in Nasr City.
Security forces arrested three assailants on Thursday, EgyNews reported. According to a source from the Cairo Security Directorate, the attackers belong to the Muslim Brotherhood group.
The source added that the attackers lead the police to the murder weapon, a metal water pipe with blood on it. The police arrested two others for inciting on violence and rioting, the portal added.
Ain Shams has witnessed violence since the outing of former President Mohamed Morsi. In January, six students were arrested at Ain Shams University during a protest in support of the deposed president. The protesters were accused violence against security forces and blocking roads.
