New smart card system for bread, gas: Ministry

New smart card system for bread, gas: Ministry

A new system is set to be launched that would ensure more effective distribution of subsidized gas and bread, the Ministry of Supplies said on Monday.

The system would be similar to the “smart card” system the Ministry of Petroleum has decided to implement, the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

Minister of Finance Ahmed Galal told MENA that the smart card system would prevent the loss of more than LE40 billion in smuggled petroleum products every year.

It would also provide the government with a database of the rates of petroleum consumption in each governorate, which in turn would help the government make decisions in times of fuel shortages, Galal told MENA.

The government also announced plans to set aside LE3 billion monthly for petroleum products to avoid shortages, and control the distribution of these products to prevent smuggling.
