New labor unions law submitted to Cabinet

The Ministry of Manpower has submitted a draft law on labor unions to the Cabinet on Monday, the state-run Egynews portal reported on Tuesday.

The draft law was accepted by consensus by labor unions, the portal reported.

Minister of Manpower and long time labor activist Kamal Abu Eita said that the draft law is the product of intensive discussions with union leaders and experts. The draft includes a stipulation for a maximum and a minimum wage, a longstanding demand of workers and labor rights advocates.

A number of labor activists have suggested that the appointment of Abu Eita is merely tokenistic, and have criticized him for accepting the post.

In November, deposed President Mohamed Morsi issued a decree criticized by labor activists as an attempt to establish Brotherhood influence over the state-controlled Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF). The federation was previously controlled by the formerly ruling National Democratic Party under the Hosni Mubarak regime.
