Most Egyptians disapprove of pro-Morsi protests, says survey

Seventy-one percent of Egyptians do not sympathize with ongoing protests calling for deposed President Mohamed Morsi's reinstatement, reported the state-run Middle East News Agency.

According to a survey conducted by Baseera — the Egyptian center for public opinion research — only 20 percent of those surveyed supported the protests, while nine percent were undecided. The center polled 2,214 Egyptians over the age of 18 from across the nation.

More men were disgruntled with the protests than women, the poll suggested, with 78 percent of males unsympathetic compared to 65 percent of females. And more women were undecided on the issue — 15 percent, as opposed to only 3 percent of males.

The survey indicated that older respondents were the least sympathetic to the pro-Morsi protests. Twenty-four percent of those aged 18–29 were in support of the protests, compared to only 14 percent of those over 50.

Sympathy rates seemingly increased according to education level, with 26 percent of those with a university degree or higher sympathizing, compared to 18 percent of those with a lesser level of education. However, only 3 percent of those with a university degree or higher said they are ambivalent on the issue, compared to 14 percent of those with a lesser degree.
