Military officer killed and two injured in eastern Cairo

A military officer was killed and two others were injured on Thursday when two unknown gunmen opened fire on an Armed Forces bus in the district of Amiriya in eastern Cairo, privately owned daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

Primary investigations revealed that the gunmen attacked the bus on Kablat Street near Matareya police station and fled the scene. The officers were taken to Zeitoun hospital and then to Kobry al-Kobba hospital.

Head of the Investigation Bureau General Mohamed Qassem, and a team of high-ranking officials, are currently questioning the injured officers in an attempt to ascertain descriptions of the assailants, state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper added.

A security cordon now surrounds the crime scenes and traffic has been redirected until forensics finish up their work.

Last month, a junior ranking police officer was killed, and another injured, in an exchange of fire with Muslim Brotherhood members in Ain Shams, northern Cairo. The assailants were part of Brotherhood-led demonstrations.

Attacks on security forces have been a frequent occurrence since the deposition of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 by head of the Armed Forces Abdel Fattah al-Sisi amid popularly led protests against the Brotherhood affiliated leader.
