Mid-year break extended for two weeks

Minister of Education Mahmoud Aboul Nasr stated on Thursday that the resumption of the school year has been delayed until March 8 instead of February 22, due to security reasons and not seasonal flu, privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm said.

Aboul Nasr added that most dormitories are not ready to receive students, and that the security company that the Supreme Council of Universities contracted with is not prepared for the new semester yet.

Aboul Nasr explained that the delay was not requested by Health Minister Maha al-Rabbat, adding that during the cabinet meeting, Rabbat explained that schools can begin their second semester normally and students infected with the flu can be quarantined and given a few days off.

The minister of education added that parts of the curriculum will be canceled as to not overload the students; however, exams will comply with the schedule previously set by the ministry. Aboul Nasr hired a number of educational experts to re-evaluate the curriculum for all school grades to decide on the parts that will be omitted without compromising the content or the educational value.
