MB supporters continue university protests
Brotherhood students continued protesting on university campuses on Tuesday, a reaction to the death of their colleagues in Al-Azhar University.
On Sunday, clashes between student protesters and police in Al-Azhar University left two students dead on campus.
Privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm reported a march consisting mainly of pro-Brotherhood students in Ain Shams University, stating that the students chanted against the police and the army and carried signs with photos of the victims. Security forces have since dispersed the protest, according to the newspaper.
State-run Al-Ahram also reported clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood student protesters in Alexandria University's Faculty of Engineering.
Meanwhile, the Freedom and Justice Portal, a Brotherhood mouthpiece, reported marches by Azhar students in several cities denouncing the killing of their colleagues on Sunday.
The protests, organized by Students Against the Coup, a coalition of pro-Brotherhood students, took place in the 10th of Ramadan, Daqahlia and Tanta branches of Al-Azhar.
The Freedom and Justice Portal added that students participating in the protests vowed not to stop despite the violence, arrests and killings.
Al-Ahram, meanwhile, reported on Tuesday that the administration of Al-Azhar University has agreed to the presence of security forces on campus, in the aftermath of ongoing protests there.
The university administration had reported that the last wave of violence on Sunday has led to some to LE10 million in losses. The administration had already allowed Osama al-Abd, head of the university, to let police in if the situation worsens.
The decision corresponds to a court ruling in February that allows for on-campus security presence, which reverses the Supreme Administrative Court 2010 ruling that outlaws campus security.
The decision follows another day of fierce clashes between Azhar students and police, which stormed the campus on Monday. A trade of accusations followed between Muslim Brotherhood students and the university administration, with the latter accusing the former of vandalizing buildings and burning cars. The students accused the police of attacking the girls' dormitory building with tear gas canisters.
