MB alliance calls for mass protest Tuesday

Muslim Brotherhood supporters called for mass protests on Tuesday, the third anniversary of former President Hosni Mubarak’s announcement that he would step down from power.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, a coalition of Brotherhood-affiliates who support deposed President Mohamed Morsi, issued the call to protest on Monday.

“Let us make the heart of Cairo our target, and the central symbolic meeting points for January 25 in the governorates, as well as intensifying revolutionary actions across the day. [Let us also] stand symbolically in front of the embassies representing the countries supporting the coup,” the alliance said in its statement.

Mubarak and Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are “one entity that aims at assassinating the January 25 revolution,” the alliance claimed, but assured that the “will of the people is much stronger.”

The banned Muslim Brotherhood group also issued a statement on Monday warning Egypt’s judges to stop persecuting the opponents of the “coup.”

The statement condemned recent sentences the courts have handed down to alleged Brotherhood affiliates. A 14-year-old girl was sentenced to a year in prison with an LE20,000 fine, a group of Al-Azhar University students were sentenced to 17 years in prison each with fines of LE65,000. Several other students, professors, doctors and engineers have also been prosecuted on the basis of their political affiliations and opposition to the military-backed interim government, the statement claimed.

Prosecutors and judges must let justice prevail “amid the wrongful attempts to drag the judiciary into the swamp of the unjust military coup, to be the stick [used by] those in power to oppress the Egyptian people,” cautioned the group.

"We shall remind the judges who support the unjust coup that their bid is losing, because the coup is quickly collapsing morally, politically, economically, locally and internationally. The bloody generals will leave you in front of the Egyptian people whom you are oppressing, and in front of the legitimacy that you are used to fight instead of protecting it. Save yourselves and leaving the sinking ship of the bloody failing coup," the group exhorted.
