Law now stipulates 3-15 year sentences for voter fraud
Interim President Adly Mansour issued a decree Sunday amending the Political Rights Law, enforcing a 3–15 year prison sentence on those who cast votes illegitimately, state run Middle East News Agency reported.
Since 1956, Article 49 of Law 73 has legislated imprisonment for fraudulent voting. After amendment, it now stipulates a specific sentence of 3-15 years for whoever votes using another name, or votes more than once.
The head of the High Elections Commission has the authority to invalidate the votes of those committing any of the aforementioned electoral crimes.
Last week, Mansour issued a decree amending the same law to allow voters to cast their ballots in any governorate.
These amendments have reportedly been passed to help ensure voting in the constitutional referendum on January 14 and 15 is accessible, free, and fair.
