Junior police officers protest for second day

Protests and sit-ins were staged by low-ranking police officers in several governorates across Egypt for the second day Sunday, state-owned news portal EGYNews reported.

Junior officers and conscripts are demanding wage increases, medical care within police hospitals and adequate protective equipment to deal with the current level of threat, which they say they face on a daily basis.

They also demanded that secret reports are no longer produced and decried the role of high-ranking officers in producing them, in addition to requesting that promotions are approved for college graduate officers, the portal added.

In Qalyubia, police officers organized sit-ins outside Khanka Police and Al-Obour Stations in addition to Banha Security Directorate, demanding bonuses and hazard allowance.

In Qena, police officers of the Naga Hamadi police station started an open strike denouncing the ill treatment they say they have been subjected to and demanding the resignation of the sheriff.

In Kafr al-Sheikh, the officers continued their sit-in in front of the Security Directorate for the second day, demanding a 30 to 200 percent raise in their hazard allowance, in addition to an annual bonus and promotions for low-ranking officers without medical checks.

The protesters also demanded a raise in their end of service compensation and that police martyrs are treated in the same way as the martyrs of the revolution.
