Investigation of suspects ordered in Rabea, Alexandria clashes

Seventy-two people are to be investigated in relation to clashes in Nasr City early Saturday that left over 70 people dead, MENA reported, while Al-Ahram said that 177 suspects are being investigated in relation to violence in Alexandria on Friday.

The suspects in Nasr City's Rabea al-Adaweya clashes face accusations of murder, possession of unlicensed weapons, thuggery, congregation, and blocking the roads. 

According to MENA, the work of a team of investigators from the East Cairo prosecution office was interrupted by members of the Muslim Brotherhood and Mohamed Morsi supporters, who allegedly assaulted them.

The investigators were then advised by police to leave and resume their work later.

The Health Ministry has said that 72 people were killed in the early hours of Saturday. Clashes erupted after police and men in plainclothes stopped an alleged attempt to block a bridge near Muslim Brotherhood’s Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in. The Brotherhood, however, place the death tally at 127.

The investigation of 115 detained suspects was also ordered after clashes in Alexandria left eight people dead on Friday, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

The Alexandria prosecution also launched investigations into 62 Muslim Brotherhood members for their involvement in the detention and torture of 16 people in the Qaed Ibrahim Mosque in central Alexandria.
