Interior Ministry: Security kill 6 Hassm militants responsible for attack on Alexandria security director
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior announced that six Hassm militants responsible for an attack on the Alexandria security director’s motorcade were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in the Beheira Governorate early Sunday.
A car bomb detonated in Alexandria as the convoy of Alexandria’s Security Director Major General Mostafa al-Nimr was driving through the coastal city’s Rushdy neighborhood early on Saturday, killing one policeman and injuring six others, one of whom has since succumbed to his wounds.
Nimr, whose motorcade was passing through Muaskar Romany Street, where the explosion took place on Saturday morning, did not sustain any injuries from the bombing, according to an unpublished statement issued to journalists by Alexandria’s Security Directorate.
The militants were hiding out in a residential apartment, the ministry statement added, saying that weapons were found in the residence, including four automatic weapons and six explosive devices.
The ministry also stated that investigations conducted by Egypt’s National Security Agency revealed that the car involved in the bombing was purchased by a Muslim Brotherhood member named Bassem Gad in January 2017, who has since fled to an Arab country.
