Interior Ministry allows detained senior Morsi aide to attend mother’s funeral

The Interior Ministry agreed on Wednesday to allow Refa’a al-Tahatawy, former head of the office of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, to attend his mother’s funeral on Thursday, state-owned newspaper al-Ahram reports.

Tahatawy was convicted on forgery charges in April and sentenced to three years in prison. He was accused of appointing a convicted felon to a government post. The former official was also allowed to visit his mother last August when she had a critical operation.

Several inmates have been denied similar requests in the past, but the ministry has granted passes in several cases that garnered media attention. In November, the ministry responded to an online campaign requesting permission for detained 21-year-old student Ayman Moussa to be released temporarily to attend his father’s funeral.

In August 2014, activists Alaa Abdel Fattah and Sanaa Seif, who were both detained at the time on protest-related charges, were allowed to attend the funeral of their father, iconic lawyer Ahmed Seif al-Islam.
