High alert in Giza after two bomb threats

An explosive sound was heard in Nahda Square near Cairo University on Thursday morning, which a source at Giza Security Directorate told privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper was intended to scare police forces in the vicinity.

The source added that a security cordon has been placed around Cairo University and police are currently searching the area for bombs.

A homemade bomb was also found inside a billboard on Gameit al-Dowal al-Arabiya Street in Mohandiseen, Giza, according to state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper. A bomb squad is currently searching the area for any other explosive devices.

Last week, an explosion near Cairo University left one dead and several injured. Brigadier General Tarek al-Mergawy was killed when a bomb exploded next to a security checkpoint outside the main gates of Cairo University. Mergawy was the head of the West Giza investigations unit, according to local newspapers.
