Hamzawy’s Freedom Egypt Party supports Sabbahi
The party of liberal academic Amr Hamzawy announced its support on Tuesday for Hamdeen Sabbahi in the upcoming presidential elections.
The Freedom Egypt Party announced in a Facebook post that it would support the leftist candidate, the only challenger to former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is expected to win the race by a large margin.
The party invited its members to participate in Sabbahi’s campaign, as well as his electoral program, after an internal vote and consultations took place.
The Freedom Egypt Party was founded by Hamzawy, a political scientist and columnist, in May 2011. He was elected to a parliamentary seat representing Heliopolis, but was removed after a court ruling found the electoral law to be unconstitutional.
So far, Sabbahi has the support of the Dostour Party, the Karama Party — of which he was a founder — The Socialist Popular Alliance Party, the Justice Party, and the Revolutionary Socialists.
Sisi has garnered support from the Wafd party, the Free Egyptians Party, Amr Moussa’s Conference Party, and the Tagammu Party.
Elections are slated to take place on May 26 and 27.
