Gehad al-Haddad arrested

Security forces arrested Gehad al-Haddad, a prominent Muslim Brotherhood spokesperson in a Nasr City apartment Tuesday afternoon, the website of the state newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

Haddad became the most recognized face of the Muslim Brotherhood in foreign media during the period following former President Mohamed Morsi's ouster, giving tours to foreign journalists of the Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in calling for Morsi’s reinstatement.

Haddad, the son of Essam al-Haddad, one of Morsi’s foreign affairs advisers, left the sit-in just hours before it was raided on August 14, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Morsi supporters.

No charges were released for his arrest. Haddad was a prominent voice defending Morsi’s administration after the former president pushed through a controversial constitution which led to violent clashes at Ettehadiya Presidential Palace.

Al-Ahram's website reported that Haddad was sent to Tora Prison and at the time of his arrest was with Ahmed Diab, a former MP from the Freedom and Justice Party, and Mohamed Abou Zeid, a member of the Brotherhood's guidance bureau, and Hossam Abu al-Bakr, the former governor of Qalyubiya.
