Friday bombings leave 4 dead in Heliopolis, South Sinai
A series of three bombings left four people dead in Cairo and South Sinai on Friday, according to the Health Ministry.
A homemade explosive device detonated at a traffic checkpoint in the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis, killing one soldier and injuring three others, a Ministry of Interior spokesperson told the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA).
The attack was similar to last month’s bombing in Cairo’s Mohandiseen neighborhood, which claimed the life of one officer.
In the South Sinai city of Al-Tur, a suicide bomber allegedly targeted a police checkpoint stationed 5 km away from the Martyr Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel, leaving two dead and five injured. The wounded are now being treated at Al-Tur Military Hospital, reported the state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram.
A third bombing targeting a tourist bus 30 km outside of the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh killed one and injured four others, who were transferred to Al-Tur Hospital.
The Ministry of Interior, interim President Adly Mansour and presidential candidate Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have all issued statements condemning the attacks.
