Five-year sentences for supporting MB

Participation in Muslim Brotherhood protests carries a prison sentence of five years, says Interior Ministry spokesperson General Hany Abdel Latif.

State-owned EGYNews added that, according to Article 86 of the Penal Code and after the government declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group, anyone who is proven to be a member of the outlawed organization, or propagates the teachings or ideologies of the group, either in writing or verbally, or possesses publications or recordings supporting the Brotherhood, could receive a sentence of five years or more in prison.

Abdel Latif added that the leaders of the group, or anyone providing financial aid, or passing on information to the organization, would be punished with a hard labor sentence.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s interim government officially classified the Brotherhood as a “terrorist organization,” and is currently moving to freeze its assets and close its offices nationwide.

The Interior Ministry’s official page on Facebook stated earlier on Thursday that, based on the Cabinet’s decision to declare the Brotherhood a terrorist group, the General Directorate for investigation and Property Rights, in cooperation with Al-Ahram institution, decided to stop printing and publishing the Freedom and Justice Newspaper, the mouth piece of the Brotherhood.

The statement added that the printing supervisor at Al-Ahram has been officially prohibited from printing the newspaper, and all materials used for printing have been confiscated.
