Egypt: 6 people killed by security forces near Assiut-Sohag road
Six people were killed on Saturday by National Security forces in a mountainous area near the Assiut-Sohag desert road, according to a statement posted on the Ministry of Interior’s Facebook page.
The statement said that during mopping-up operations in the remote area in Upper Egypt, the ministry uncovered a group of terrorists hiding out near a mountain creek.
During the ensuing raid, terrorists shot at the security forces, who responded by shooting back, killing six of them, according to the statement.
The statement did not mention any injuries among members of the security forces, nor the names of those killed or what crimes they were suspected of.
The ministry did state that it seized guns and ammunition, as well as plans, tools and an explosive device during the raid.
In the largest recent raid of this type, security forces killed 40 “terrorists” during simultaneous raids in Giza and North Sinai in late December, hours after a roadside bomb hit a tourist bus on Giza’s Mariouteya Road, killing four.
