Egypt's Foreign Ministry announced the arrest of the driver who ran over and killed an Egyptian citizen in Kuwait last Saturday.

Ahmed Atef Farghali, an Egyptian who worked in Kuwait, was killed after a fight broke out between him and a group of Kuwaiti citizens when he reportedly refused to sell a video game console at a discounted price.

The fight escalated, until one of the Kuwaitis fatally rammed Farghali with his car and fled the scene.

Another Egyptian citizen and a Kuwaiti citizen were injured in the incident.

The Foreign Ministry’s statement added that the driver has been charged with murder, excessive speed and fleeing the scene.

Eight other Kuwaiti citizens were also arrested for allegedly engaging in the fight.

The Egyptian consulate in Kuwait is following up on a number of Egyptians who were detained following the incident. Kuwaiti prosecution pledged to release those who are not proven to have been involved in the fight and were merely defending themselves, the statement said.

In a phone-in on Dream TV Sunday night, the Egyptian ambassador to Kuwait Yasser Atef said 13 Egyptians were being held pending investigations, asserting that only four of them were involved.

The consulate designated a lawyer to attend the investigations, the statement added.

Following the incident, pictures and videos of the fight and Farghali’s lifeless body circulated on social media under the hashtag #قتلوا_المصرى (They killed the Egyptian), with users decrying the murder and calling for better rights for Egyptian expats.
