Death toll from Friday’s clashes rises to 15

The death toll from Friday’s clashes rose to 15, according to the health ministry, with a total of 87 injuries nationwide.

Clashes between security forces and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was designated a terrorist organization in late December by Egypt’s cabinet, erupted in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Damietta, Beni Suef, Sharqiya, Fayoum, Beheira, Minya, Ismailia and Qena.

Violence resulted in the death of four in Beni Suef, three in Fayoum, two each in Cairo and Beheira, and one each in Damietta, Minya, Giza, and Qena, the health ministry stated.

A four-year-old girl was reportedly among the casualties of the clashes, which broke out in the aftermath of a string of explosions that rocked the capital earlier in the day. At least six people died as a result of the four blasts, the first of which went off at the Cairo Security Directorate in downtown, with the subsequent explosions taking place in Dokki, Talbeya, and Haram.

The umbrella group which calls itself the Anti-Coup Alliance, comprised of supporters and members of the Muslim Brotherhood and deposed President Mohamed Morsi, placed the death toll at 17, maintaining that three people were killed in Fayoum, and three in Minya.

Tens of protesters have been arrested in Alexandria, Minya, Ismailia, Luxor, Suez, and Damietta.
