Clashes flare around Ain Shams University

Around 200 student supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood from Ain Shams University blocked Khalifa al-Maamoun Street on Thursday, privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

Several car owners and drivers clashed with the students. The protesters blocked the street headed towards the Ministry of Defense, causing congestion in Abbasseya, Roxy and Lotfy al-Sayed Street. They used flares and fireworks, which caused a state of panic among pedestrians and residents of the busy street.

The minister of interior's assistant for security, Osama al-Sagher, dispatched forces to control the situation, and traffic police directed traffic until the road was reopened.

Meanwhile, at Al-Azhar University, some 150 students blocked the area around the campus. Security forces dispersed the demonstration and normal traffic resumed.

Almost two weeks ago, police arrested several Al-Azhar students from the district of Imbaba following clashes around Cairo University, alleging they were involved in disrupting traffic and setting a broadcasting van on fire.
