Clashes break out in Tahrir on Mohamed Mahmoud anniversary

Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in downtown Cairo on the second anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud battle on Tuesday night.

Police fired tear gas and birdshot at protestors who they accused of attempting to storm the Arab League building, said an Interior Ministry statement.

The ministry claimed that at 9 pm, a number of the protesters gathered in Tahrir Square smashed the windows and attacked the façade of the building, located at the entrance to the square from Qasr al-Nil Bridge.

Hundreds were gathered in the square to commemorate the second anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes, which raged for days in 2011 after police forcibly dispersed a sit-in held by families of demonstrators that were injured in previous protests.

Clashes raged for days in 2012 on the anniversary of the clashes, as well.
