The Canadian Embassy in Cairo resumed visa services on Thursday after a 17-day suspension, although the Garden City premises remains closed.

Passport and consular services for Canadians can be set by appointment. In the case of an emergency, Canadian citizens can call or email a designated number/address, a statement posted on the embassy’s website said on Thursday.

The Canadian and British embassies, both located in Garden City, recently suspended their services in Cairo for undisclosed security reasons. The latter resumed its services last week, due to “the vital cooperation of the Egyptian government,” the ambassador stated.

Last Thursday, Special Forces were deployed to all embassies in Cairo in anticipation of potential terrorist attacks.

The Canadian Embassy's building, on Kamal al-Shinawy Street, is meters away from its British and US counterparts, and is situated in front of the new premises for the Syrian Embassy, which relocated more than a year ago from Dokki to Garden City.

On December 8, the Associated Press wrote that the Canadian Embassy had asked for extra security and the closure of all surrounding roads. Security officials reportedly agreed to the increase in security, but refused to close the streets.

The Associated Press added that a security official revealed that recently arrested militants disclosed information about potential terrorist attacks on embassies in Cairo.
