Bomb explodes in Dokki, two policemen injured

A bomb exploded in Giza, south of Cairo, on Tuesday morning, local media and eyewitnesses reported.

The explosive went on near a traffic police kiosk near the Galaa Bridge in Dokki, the privately-owned Al-Masry Al-Youm reported. The primitive bomb hit two policemen who were immediately transferred to the nearby police hospital.

A Mada Masr journalist on site reported an eyewitness saying that the explosion blew off one of the policemen's legs. The eyewitness showed a cellphone picture of the policeman with his injured leg.

A Giza Security Directorate source told the state-owned Al-Ahram that the person who threw the bomb was arrested, after a taxi driver followed and cornered him and policemen managed to take him to the Dokki police station.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the suspect, 23, said that he belongs to Agnad Masr. The group had taken responsibility over previous attacks in the area in its quest for retribution against the security apparatus and the crackdown on Islamists. The alleged attacker is also from the upper Egyptian governorate of Beni Suef, Al-Ahram reported.

The witness interviewed by Mada Masr also said that the attacker was apprehended.

Policemen inspected the area in Dokki where the explosion took place. The square was cordoned.

Al-Ahram also reported that a bomb was defused next to the North Giza court on Monday night. Ministry of Interior sources said that policemen arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a suspicious person near the court. The bomb they found was allegedly connected to a power circuit and a mobile phone.

Attacks on policemen have been occurring on a regular basis in the last eight months in the aftermath of the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi and the forced dispersal of the sit-ins by Muslim Brotherhood supporters demanding his reinstatement. A crackdown on the group has followed, as well as a series of attacks on security and military targets throughout Egypt.
