Beheira registrar office attacked, computer stolen
A source from the Beheira governorate headquarters said on Thursday that unknown assailants broke into the building and stole the computer that registers endorsements for presidential candidates from the registrar office. The stolen computer apparently links Damanhour to a national network of registrar offices.
According to state-owned EgyNews, the safe inside the office was also broken into, but did not contain any money at the time.
Presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi's campaign issued a statement on Thursday condemning the incident, adding that the thieves were clearly trying to obstruct the issuance of endorsements. The statement also questioned the circumstances of the theft, adding that the building is meant to be well-secured.
The campaign called for an extension of work hours of the office to 7 pm instead of 4 pm, to compensate for the time wasted during the investigation, and the Sabbahi supporters who left without issuing their endorsements.
