Azhar students vandalize faculty building in protest

Around 200 students from Al-Azhar University destroyed parts of the building of the faculty of the Fundamentals of Religion and escaped before the arrival of the police.

Head of security at the university, Magdy Abbas told Al-Masry Al-Youm that a number of students had gathered outside the office of the dean of the faculty, but were stopped by security.

According to the independently owned newspaper, the students chanted against the police, military, Al-Azhar and the university.

A number of female student supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood organized a march outside the faculty of Islamic Studies at Al-Azhar University in Damanhour, demanding the return of ousted President Mohamed Morsi. According to state-owned EgyNews, the students called for the release of their arrested colleagues, who have been accused of inciting protests and violence.

Al-Azhar University has been a place of violence and clashes since the former president was deposed. Last month, a homemade bomb exploded near the fence surrounding Al-Azhar University hostel in Nasr City, East Cairo.
