Ansar Beit al-Maqdes announces death of founding member
The Sinai-based jihadi group Ansar Beit al-Maqdes said in a statement late Friday that one of its founders died in a car accident on Tuesday, when he was carrying a thermal bomb.
Tawfiq Mohamed Feraig died due to severe injuries when the thermal bomb he carried exploded during a car accident, the statement said.
The jihadi group has claimed responsibility for a wide range of attacks on police and army forces following the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July, including an assassination attempt against Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, the bombing of the Mansoura security directorate in December and Cairo security directorate in late January.
According to the statement, Feraig was "one of those who had a unique effect on jihadi work in Sinai, and was one of the early founders of Ansar Beit al-Maqdes, and led many of its operations."
The jihadi group said that the deceased leader was behind the idea of bombing gas pipelines bound for Israel, and pioneered these operations. The pipelines have been repeatedly attacked since the outbreak of the January 25 revolution in 2011.
