Alliance rejects constitution while Nour Party voices support

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy says it rejects the draft constitution.

In a statement released Wednesday, the group called Amr Moussa, head of the draft committee, a “remnant” of the former Hosni Mubarak regime and said that the committee that drafted and voted for the amended document “lacks legitimacy.”

The referendum on the constitution will be the same as referendums held under Mubarak’s rule, the statement continued, implying that the result was a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, a senior member of the Salafist Nour Party, once a close ally of the Muslim Brotherhood, told the privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm Wednesday that the party supports the draft constitution, and will meet Thursday to devise a plan to ensure its passage in the upcoming referendum.

Shaaban Abdel Alim, deputy secretary-general of Nour Party, said his party intends to counter any campaign mounted by the Brotherhood and its supporters against the constitution.

On Tuesday, representatives of groups opposed to the current interim government met with a delegation from the European Parliament. Among the groups present were the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy and the Wasat Party.

Omar Farouk, assistant secretary-general of the Wasat Party, told the state-owned Al Ahram daily that those attending the meeting informed the delegation of human rights violations since the July removal of former President Mohamed Morsi.
