Ahram Gate journalists in court for allegedly insulting justice minister

Ahram Gate journalists in court for allegedly insulting justice minister
Former Justice Minister Ahmed al-Zend

A judge on Wednesday referred Hesham Younes, the editor-in-chief of online news portal Ahram Gate, to court, along with Ahram Gate journalist Ahmed Amer, on charges of insulting Justice Minister Ahmed al-Zend, according to a report in Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper.

Zend filed a lawsuit against the journalists following the publication of a report on Ahram Gate in September 2014 accusing him of selling state-owned land to a relative at a reduced price.

The report, written by Amer, claimed that the Al-Ahram news organization had acquired paperwork proving that Zend, then the head of the Judges Club, had sold 508.5 square meters of land owned by the club to his wife’s cousin for LE18,000 per square meter. The report claims that the going rate for land in that location was LE50,000 per square meter.

The report also states that the land was allocated to the club by the governorate to build a library for judges and that the club was not empowered to sell it.

Zend has a history of suing journalists and public figures for defamation and insult.

Yesterday, Hesham Geneina, the head of the Central Auditing Authority, was summoned to court on similar charges, also fielded by Zend.
