9 arrested in Minya violence
Security forces in the Minya governorate arrested nine people accused of breaking into police stations and churches following the forced dispersal of al-Nahda and Rabea al-Adaweya sit-ins on August 14, Al-Ahram reported.
Violent clashes had broken out in Minya where thousands of supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi attacked and torched police stations and seized weapons.
Morsi’s supporters had also raided and burned churches and Coptic residents’ houses.
Police forces arrested five of those accused of breaking into al-Adwa police station. Two others were arrested in Samalout and another two in the city of Minya.
Attacks against churches and sectarian violence have increased in Minya and elsewhere in Egypt following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi on July 3. Criticism has been directed at the lack of government response to the ongoing crisis.
