23 Egyptians killed in Libya

Twenty three Egyptian workers were killed Saturday night in the Libyan capital Tripoli in a rocket attack, state-owned Al-Ahram reported.

In statements to the Middle East News Agency (MENA), Alaa Hadoura, head of the Egyptian community in Libya, said a Grad rocket fell on the workers' homes in the Karimiya area in Tripoli, killing them.

Ongoing fighting has gripped the city over the past two weeks, between an armed group from the town of Zintan, which has controlled the Tripoli International Airport since the overthrow of Muammar Qadhafi in 2011, and fighters from Misrata.

The fighting has so far resulted in the death of 47 people and the injury of 120 others, Al-Ahram said.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged citizens to avoid traveling to Libya and called for Egyptian residents in Libya to steer clear of the violence.

Around 1.5 million Egyptians were employed in the oil-rich Libyan state prior to the 2011 uprisings in the region.

The number of Egyptians working in Libya is reported to have significantly decreased since the country's February 17 uprising, which began in Benghazi, and ultimately toppled long-time president Qadhafi.
