11 Brothers arrested for alleged terrorist operations

Security agencies in the governorate of Beheira, in coordination with Egypt’s National Security Agency, arrested 11 members of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood group on accusations of forming a terrorist cell, the state-run Ahram Gate reported today.

In their possession, they found radio network equipment, allegedly broadcasting to anti-Egyptian state channels, as well as gunpowder, nails and wires to manufacture improvised explosive devices, the Arabic-language news website said, quoting Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Tahoun, head of Beheira’s security.

The 11 were arrested from their homes in the city of Damanhour.

There has been a wide-scale crackdown on Islamists and secular political activists since former President Mohamed Morsi's military-backed ouster last July, after mass protests calling on him to resign.  At least 16,000 people have since been arrested, which includes secular political activists, based on official figures, and up to 40,000 based on activist figures.

The Brotherhood group was banned in December after a bombing, which they claimed no responsibility for.
