When operation of the Aswan High Dam flooded Nubian ancestral homelands and forced its communities to migrate north, many elements of their indigenous culture were affected, including their language. Subsequent generations of Nubians raised in urban centers and educated in Arabic curricula have lost much of their linguistic heritage. Momen Talosh, a third-generation Nubian raised in Alexandria, has responded by developing a phone application to help a new generation of native smart phone users learn the Nubian of their forefathers.
