Just as hairstyles come and go, Egypt's Barbers and Beauticians Association has undergone many transformations over the years. Association director Nasser Umran tells how the entity — established by Greeks in the 1940s — had 40,000 members at the height of its activity, and now totals only 32. Located in downtown Cairo's crumbling Tawfiqiya quarter, it doubles as a beauty school, where customers pay symbolic fees to have their hair trimmed or done up by students.
